Moving Checklist

In the lead up to your relocation, it’s easy to overlook the small things. We developed a handy checklist to help make your move easy.

4-6 Weeks before your move

  • Book your removal company.
  • Dispose of any items you no longer need. Remember charities, friends and family may appreciate your pre-loved items.
  • Sort through your garage and garden shed.
  • Start using up all food and opened packets from your cupboards and fridge/freezer. Throw out anything past it’s use by date.
  • Check moving instructions for your washing machine and dryer with the manufacturer.
  • Organise for gas cylinders to be professionally emptied.
  • Organise any school or day care transfers.

2-3 Weeks before your move

  • Redirect your mail.
  • Divert your phone and internet.
  • Organise final reading for power.
  • Cancel gas bottle deliveries.
  • Arrange care for your children and pets on the moving day.
  • Arrange cleaning of your new and old home.

If you are packing

  • Purchase cartons and packing materials.
  • Use clean white paper as newspaper can soil your belongings.
  • Remove all breakables from drawers.
  • Clearly label all boxes with contents and room locations.
  • Clearly label all boxes with breakable items.
  • Organise an ‘essentials’ carton with items you will need immediately at your new home, including things like bed linen, towels, toiletries, medications and clothes, pet food and dishes and the kettle.
  • Pack lighter items in large cartons and heavier items in small cartons.

1 week to moving day

  • Arrange parking and access for removalists.
  • Make sure removalist has your new address and phone numbers.
  • Dismantle furniture, tape screws etc in an obvious place.

The day before

  • If scheduled, professional packers will arrive to pack your belongings. Make sure you leave out your essential items for that night and the following morning.
  • Defrost, dry and air your fridge and freezer.

Moving Day

  • Empty fish tanks and terrariums.
  • Transport perishable foods in your esky or cooler.
  • Have a plan at hand  for furniture placement in your new home.
  • Have your essentials box handy.

  • Check and sign the removalist’s Inventory and Condition Report.
  • Check tops of cupboards.

In your new home
