Many people overlook the importance of organizing their storage units until they need an item buried deep inside. If you plan to rent a storage unit, consider organizing your belongings before you move everything in. With proper organization techniques, you can easily access any item when you need it.
When you organize your unit, you can avoid safety hazards, like unsecured boxes, and broken items. Here are some simple tips to help you keep your storage unit clean and organized.
Rent the Right Amount of Space
Some people make the mistake of renting a unit that is too small for the number of items they need to store. Remember that it’s better to have extra space, rather than not enough space.
If you rent a unit that is barely large enough to store all of your belongings, you may struggle to find some items in the future. Instead, rent a larger unit so you can easily look through stored items. Talk with a storage company to determine what size of unit you will need for your belongings. Many storage companies can show you which sizes they offer to help you make a decision.
Pack with a Plan
You can save yourself time later if you pack your belongings with a plan in mind. For instance, determine how often you use each item as you pack. If there are items that you don’t use as often, place them together in one box and mark the box accordingly.
Keep the boxes with items that you rarely use near the back of the unit. On the other hand, you should place boxes with frequently used items near the front of the storage unit, where you can easily access them. You may also want to make a list of the items in each box or put a label on each box with its contents. Labels and lists can save you time if you ever need to find an item in your storage unit.
In addition, try to fill each box as much as possible. When you pack your boxes tightly, they are less likely to fall over due to uneven weight distributions. Similarly, try to only use two sizes of boxes to make organizing your unit easier.
As you create your plan, place furniture and larger items near the back of the unit. If you store larger items near the back of the unit, you can leave more space near the front of the unit for items you will need more regularly. You can also create more free space by storing some items vertically, such as a sofa.
By storing your sofa upright, you can avoid damage from boxes lying on the sofa springs for long periods of time. However, you don’t want to damage your possessions by placing them upright. Make sure to check with the manufacturer about storing some items this way.
Organize According to Your Plan
As you unload boxes into your storage unit, stick to your plan. If you make changes to your plan, write them down to avoid confusion later. As you move items into the unit, do your best to keep any labels on boxes where you can easily see them.
Store heavier boxes near the floor, and then place lighter boxes on top. If you have enough space, try leaving a walkway down the middle of the unit in case you need to retrieve an item from the back of the unit.
